1. If the PROXY file is "DV
Widescreen, 29.97fps" and the 4:2:2 YUV is "HD Widescreen,
23.98fps" then how can it be timecode accurate?
As long as you set your project
to 23.98fps, Vegas will do the pulldown (i.e., IVTC) on-the-fly so
it remains frame accurate. That’s what’s so great about Vegas. You
can throw all sorts of different frame rates and resolutions on
the timeline and Vegas will always “do the right thing”.
2. What about
CF25? If I shoot my footage in CF25 and I want to end up with a
24P NTSC DVD and a 24P HDCAM version, will gearshift do the 4%
slowdown and all that stuff?? And, if originating from CF25 what
will the proxy be? DV Widescreen, 29.97fps 60i? or DV Widescreen,
25fps 50i? or progressive?
GEARSHIFT is merely script for
Vegas. So actually, Vegas is doing all the work. GEARSHIFT is
automating the tasks and providing the flow, order, and process
templates by which it accomplishes this task. Vegas will correctly
convert from 25fps to 24fps. We recommend the PAL DV Widescreen
Proxy which is already 25fps.
3.
If GEARSHIFT will convert my HDV footage to 24p (or
30p or 60i or 50i or whatever i choose) then why on earth
will anybody ever need a program like DVFILM.COM? If this is
true...this is amazing!!
Many people
prefer the finished look of Vegas' resampling to the DVFilm
process, but opinions differ. In a recent discussion on one of the
newsgroups, several people commented that our Celluloid and
Ultimate S flow was a preferable result to what DVFilm and other
conversions provide.
4.
I can't find GearShift in my
plugin tools. How do I access it?
Look in your
Tools>Scripting menu, you'll find it there. Doubleclick the Vegas
toolbar to access the GearShift icon if you'd like to install the
icon to your toolbar.
5. Do I need
4:2:2 YUV uncompressed? Isn't CineRorm good enough?
If you plan on using the Decklink
cards from BlackMagic Design, you MUST use the 4:2:2 YUV codec.
It's not a question of "good enough" but rather a question of what
the card demands. Of course, you could edit the CineForm stream,
and then upsample that to the 4:2:2 YUV uncompressed, but that is
just another transcode, and could cost you video quality. If you
plan on using the Decklink, transcode directly to the 4:2:2 YUV
and either use the CineForm or DV proxies as your editing source,
and then swap out the DI for the 4:2:2 YUV.
